Camera Review: Sony Alpha A7 III

Spoiler alert: The Sony A7 III is awesome.

Every camera and camera brand out there will have its own strengths and weaknesses, so you’ll never find one that is truly perfect.

That means you have to make choices and look around for the one that meets your needs the most.

There are compromises you’ll have to make, but you should never compromise on quality.

After having gone through that process, I swear by Sony’s Alpha series as the best set of cameras available today. The image quality is breathtaking and its ability to perform regardless of the situation you put it in is equally so.

Like I said above, every camera and camera brand have their strengths and weaknesses. Fujifilm, for example, has excellent color science and so its cameras have a reputation for capturing vibrant colors really well.

So why Sony?

Among a ton of other reasons, light!

Light is the photographer’s most important tool, and Sony’s ability to capture light even in circumstances where the natural lighting might be poor (for example, a mountain sunset or a dark, yet stunning altar in a Viennese cathedral) is unmatched.

This shot was taken without using a tripod. It is insane how well this camera can capture light in dark environments while still producing, a gorgeous, high-quality image.

There is no decline in image quality relative to shooting outdoors on a sunny day with plenty of natural lighting to work with. And, as you can see, there’s not always a need to use a tripod either!

Sony is the Master of Darkness

Most cameras will struggle to capture light in the way that our eyes can when the lights start to go down, and so there’s going to be a drop in image quality when you’re shooting in a well-lit setting versus darker environments.

Not with this camera.

The Sony A7 III is going to capture whatever you shoot with perfect fidelity regardless of the circumstances you’re shooting in. But first, you have to learn how to climb its steep learning curve.

While we’re at it, we should talk about who the Sony A7III is for: this camera is not for beginners!

Why?

For one, it isn’t cheap. It would be a real shame as a beginner to drop at least $2000 on a camera just to find out you don’t enjoy photography!

More importantly, it’s a hard camera to learn how to use. There are a lot of options, menus, and different things you can do. That’s part of what makes this camera so amazing, but it also means that it can be overwhelming for beginners. It’s best to start with something that is simpler so you can learn the basics first!

So if you know you’re into photography and you’re looking to up your game, this is the camera to buy! It’s expensive, but if you know how to use it, you’re getting top-notch image quality and unlimited potential for epic photography and videos.

All that being said: a golden rule of buying camera gear is to get a lens that is just as good as the camera body itself. A great camera body combined with an average lens is only going to give you average-looking images! If you really want the best, you have to be willing to spend a lot of money on the lens as well.

My main lens is currently a Sony FE 24-105mm G OSS and it is a perfect fit for my needs. It’s versatile, lightweight, and provides amazing image quality.

If you get a lens (or lenses!) that fits your style of photography, the Sony A7III can’t be beat.

I can’t recommend it enough.

I’m beyond happy with what this camera does for me! If you’re a photographer looking to move to a camera with best-in-market image quality, this is the camera for you.
